Description

Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker 204MF is a classic, highly regarded fixed-angle knife and tool sharpening system. It was Spyderco’s first product (predating their knives) and remains one of the most popular and user-friendly sharpeners available.

Key Features and Design

The system centers on a durable ABS plastic base with a matching lid that serves as both a storage case and a handhold for stability during use. All components nest inside the base for compact, portable storage (self-contained and travel-ready).

It includes:

Two pairs of high-alumina ceramic triangular stones (approximately 7″ / 178 mm long × 0.5″ / 13 mm):

Medium-grit (brown, roughly equivalent to ~600 grit) for aggressive sharpening, shaping, or restoring dull edges.

Fine-grit (white, roughly equivalent to ~1200 grit) for refining and professional-grade finishing.

Aluminum Safety rods that protect the user’s hands.

Instruction booklet and DVD

The triangular stones are versatile:

Flat sides for plain (straight) edges.

Rounded corners for serrated edges, allowing the stone to flow into the serrations with a slightly looser grip.

A longitudinal furrow/groove on each stone for sharpening pointed items such as fishhooks, darts, awls, or similar tools.

Keyed slots and holes in the base hold the stones at precise angles:

40° inclusive (20° per side) — standard for most utility, pocket, and outdoor knives.

30° inclusive (15° per side) — for thinner edges, kitchen knives, or back-beveling/thinning.

12.5° setting for scissors.

Flip the base over and a channel allows two stones to be laid flat side-by-side as a makeshift benchstone for larger tools. The lid can snap partially over the base as a stable handhold.

How It Works

The design removes much of the skill and guesswork from freehand sharpening. Insert the stones into the desired angle slots, keep the knife blade vertical (perpendicular to the base), and draw the edge along the stones from heel to tip in alternating strokes. Consistent vertical orientation automatically maintains the correct bevel angle on both sides.

Typical process (per instructions and common use):

Start with medium stones (corners or flats depending on the desired aggressiveness) to shape or restore the edge.

Progress to fine stones for honing and polishing.

Alternate sides evenly (e.g., sets of strokes per side).

It works dry—no oil, water, or lubricants required. The ceramic stones are hard enough for a wide range of steels (including stainless, tool steels, and many modern high-hardness alloys) while being relatively gentle on the blade compared with some aggressive systems. They can also handle scissors, certain other edged tools, and pointed implements.

Care and Notes

Handle the ceramic stones carefully—they can break if dropped (similar to glass).

Clean with a plastic scouring pad and powdered abrasive cleanser; air-dry. They are autoclave-safe.

Reputation and Use Cases

The Sharpmaker is praised for its simplicity, consistency, portability, and ability to produce sharp, usable edges with minimal practice—ideal for beginners while remaining effective for experienced users. It is popular for kitchen knives, folding/pocket knives, fixed blades, serrated edges, and general maintenance. Many knife enthusiasts and professionals recommend it as a reliable “set it and forget the angle” system that removes little steel while restoring a keen edge.

The Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker 204MF remains a durable, no-nonsense, highly effective sharpening kit that has stood the test of time for everyday and professional edge maintenance.
