Description
Spyderco C81PBBK2 Para Military 2 Lightweight Black Blade PlainEdge is the tactical/blacked-out version of Spyderco’s lightweight Para Military 2, released as part of the brand’s 50th anniversary lineup.
Overview
This model builds on the highly requested Lightweight PM2 platform by adding a non-reflective Black DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coating on the blade. It delivers the same excellent ergonomics, strength, and performance as the standard PM2 but in a significantly lighter package with a stealthier appearance. The FRN (Fiberglass Reinforced Nylon) handle and black blade make it ideal for users seeking a low-profile, corrosion-resistant EDC that disappears better in the pocket.

Design & Features
The C81PBBK2 keeps the proven PM2 ergonomics: a generous finger choil, thumb ramp with jimping, and a handle shape that feels secure and comfortable for extended use. The black FRN scales with Spyderco’s Bi-Directional texturing provide outstanding grip in wet or gloved conditions while keeping weight down and improving corrosion resistance compared to G-10.
The Black DLC-coated CTS-BD1N blade offers a tactical look, reduced glare, and added surface protection. CTS-BD1N performs well for everyday tasks like slicing, cutting cardboard, food prep, and general utility work. The full flat grind ensures strong slicing performance.
The Compression Lock remains one of the best in the industry — strong, reliable, and allowing safe one-handed closing.
How It Compares
To the standard (non-black) Lightweight (C81PBK2): Identical except for the blade coating. The DLC version adds stealth and extra corrosion resistance.
To the G-10 PM2 (e.g., C81GPBK2): Much lighter and slimmer in the pocket, with easier-sharpening steel (CTS-BD1N vs. premium S45VN) but slightly less “premium” edge-holding feel for some users. The FRN version feels more modern and less bulky.
Many enthusiasts prefer the Lightweight models for daily carry, reserving heavier G-10 versions for harder use.
Who It’s For
Perfect for EDC users, military, law enforcement, or anyone wanting a capable, USA-made folder that’s lighter on the belt or in the pocket. The blacked-out look appeals to those who prefer a tactical aesthetic without sacrificing Spyderco’s renowned quality and one-handed operation.
It excels at slicing tasks, box opening, rope cutting, and general utility while remaining comfortable for larger hands.
