Description
Spyderco C276GP Retract Black G-10 PlainEdge is a distinctive folding knife designed by renowned custom knifemaker and bladesmith Ed Schempp. It stands out in Spyderco’s lineup with its aggressive, kukri-inspired recurved blade and focus on cutting efficiency.
Design and Blade
The Retract’s most striking feature is its 3.4-inch recurved blade made from 9Cr18MoV stainless steel with a full-flat grind and satin finish. The blade draws inspiration from the Nepalese kukri, incorporating a dramatic curve and a “negative blade angle” philosophy. This positions the cutting edge lower than the user’s knuckles during use, delivering superior leverage and control for powerful draw cuts, slicing, and heavy utility tasks.
9Cr18MoV is a high-chromium stainless steel that provides good corrosion resistance, solid edge retention, and ease of sharpening — making it well-suited for an everyday carry (EDC) knife that sees real-world use.
It features a plain edge (no serrations) and deploys via a thumb hole. The knife uses a reliable liner lock mechanism, machined nearly flush to the handle scales for safety during high-pressure cutting.
Handle and Ergonomics
The handle consists of black peel-ply textured G-10 scales over skeletonized stainless steel liners with a partial G-10 backspacer. The textured G-10 offers excellent grip, even in wet or sweaty conditions, while keeping the overall weight manageable. A reversible deep-pocket wire clip allows for discreet, ambidextrous tip-up carry.
Key dimensions:
Overall Length: 7.79 inches (open)
Closed Length: 4.49 inches
Blade Thickness: 0.116 inches
Weight: Typically lightweight for its size (around 3.5–4 oz based on similar models)
Performance and Intended Use
The Retract excels at slicing and draw cuts thanks to its blade geometry. The recurved shape makes it particularly effective for tasks like cutting rope, cardboard, packaging, or general utility work where a strong pulling motion is beneficial. While not a dedicated tactical or outdoor survival knife, its sturdy construction and lock make it capable for harder tasks.
Unique, high-performance blade geometry for efficient cutting
Strong liner lock and grippy G-10 handle
Good stainless steel with easy maintenance
Overall, the Spyderco C276GP Retract is a bold, purpose-driven knife that brings custom design elements from Ed Schempp into a production format. It’s ideal for users who prioritize cutting performance and a secure grip in a compact, pocket-friendly package. If you value distinctive blade shapes and reliable daily utility, this model is worth considering.
